Philip Williams (1839-1903)

Philip Williams was born around 1839 at Beech Farm, the son of Roger and Ann Williams.

In spite of not being the eldest, it was Philip who stayed at home to farm (and eventually take over the running of the farm from his widowed mother) and became the proprietor at Beech Farm.

He left marriage until late, marrying the recently widowed Anne Lewis (nee Gwatkin) at the age of 45. Anne was the daughter of William and Eliza Gwatkin of nearby Maesmawr farm and had previously been married to Isaac Edward Lewis. Isaac and Anne had five children before Isaac’s untimely death in 1881 (aged 36). Anne was 31 when widowed and 34 when she married Philip.

Following Philip and Anne’s marriage, they had further children at Beech Farm - Richard Henry Williams (10 Dec 1887-1976) and Annie Kate Williams (1890-1951). Interestingly both Richard and Annie married into the Crump family - Richard marrying Florence Gertrude Crump on 23rd December 1913 at Monkswood and Annie Kate marrying William Isaac Crump the following year.

Philip died on 24th January 1903 at Beech Farm, having lived all his life there. He was buried at Mount Zion Baptist chapel. His widow Anne lived until 22nd December 1920 and died at Little Cross, Bryngwyn, Raglan.
