Edward Simons

The first Simons that we come across in Glascoed, was actually an Ann Symon who married James Williams of Beech Farm in 1859.

The main Simons family that I have come across, is that of Edward Simons, who farmed at Glascoed Fach farm (translated as “Little Glascoed). I believe that this would have been in the early 1900s. Edward was born in approximately 1862 and married Sarah Parsons on Christmas Day 1883 at Pontnewynydd Church.

They had at least  nine children:

Rees Simons born c. 1883 at Pontnewynydd. Rees later married Gertrude Harvey (born c. 1887) at Trevethin Parish Church on 1st April 1907.

Edward Joseph Simons born c. 1887 at Pontnewynydd. Married Jessie Cooper (c.1888-March 1949) on 20th April 1908 at Trevethin.

Sarah Jane Simons born c.1889 at Pontnewynydd.

Albert J Simons born c. 1891. Albert married Winifred Hill on Boxing Day 1921 at Trevethin Parish Church.

William Henry Simons (c. 1892) married Nellie Blackmore on 2nd November 1913 at Pontnewynydd.

Lilley Simons born c. 1894.

Edith Simons born c. 1895.

Wilfred Simons born c. 1899. Married Violet Griffin (born c. 1902) on 23rd April 1923 at Pontnewynydd church.

and Flossie Simons born c. 1903.

Edward, Sarah and Flossie are all buried at Monkswood churchyard. Their gravestone reads as follows:

In Loving Memory of SARAH, wife of EDWARD SIMONS, of Glascoed Vach, who died Jan 8th 1930, Aged 65. My Toil is O’er and God has chosen me to rest. Also of the above EDWARD SIMONS died June 29th 1936, aged 74. Resting. (Also?) of FLOSSIE, their daughter.

Their son Albert, farmed at the Wern farm, Glascoed initially and some years later took over the Hill Farm in the hamlet.
