Charles Williams (1850)

Charles appeared on the 1851 census at Beech Farm as the son of Ann (nee Morgan) and Roger Williams. This appears highly unlikely, since at the time, Roger would have been about 60 years old and Ann aged 50. Not inconceivable, but there was actually a 6 year gap between Charles’ birth and Henry Williams, the next Williams child in age order.

What seems more likely is the reasonably common Victorian phenomenon of a child born out of wedlock to a younger daughter in a family being passed off on the census as the child of the young mum’s parents. The only way of proving it I think is to order the birth certificate. The most likely candidate “Mum” for this theory would be Mary Ann Williams (aged 17 or 18 at the time of the birth).

I can’t find a trace of a Charles born in Glascoed of close to the right age on any subsequent censuses through the census indexes on ancestry, so it appears that Charles may well have died young … very sad.
