22 September 1871

NOT PROVEN.-Thomas Smith, of Glascoed, farm labourer, was summoned as being the father of the illegitimate child of Martha Harnay, a married woman, whose husband was transported three years ago, for 14 years. —Mr. Alexander Edwards for the defendant, and Mr. H. Roberts for defendant—-Several witnesses were called to prove that the parties had been seen walking together, but the plaintiff swore that he never had been unduly familiar with the woman; and his master, Mr. Arnold, swore that in his presence defendant told the woman he never would pay, as it was not his child.—The case was dismissed.
