Mary Susanna Morgan (1842)

Mary Susanna was born in about 1842 at Glascoed and was christened on 20th October 1842 at Monkswood Parish Church.

Her parents were John Morgan and Mary (nee Arthur). Mary spent her early life at Hill Farm. She was certainly there until at least the time of the 1861 census, where she was listed as a “Farmer’s daughter”.

Mary married David Fothergill Rowland on 6th April 1869 at St. Leonard’s, Shoreditch in London. He was an assistant surgeon.

Their son James Frederick Fothergill Rowlands’ baptism entry for 12 January 1870 has them living at Elm Cottage, but there is no trace of her husband David from that date onwards. Mary Susanna’s mother Martha Morgan is listed as the head of the Elm Villa household in the 1871 census with Mary Susanna and James living there with her. All three of them are staying at Bridge House in Mamhilad in the 1881 Census, which may have been an alternative name for Elm Cottage.

Mary Susanna was listed still as living there in the 1901 and 1911 census entries where the house was named as Elm Tree Cottage and Elm Cottage respectively. Her son Frederick had married Clare Waites in 1899. They were living in Tottenham in 1901 and then 18 Kingdom Road in West Hampstead at the time of the 1911 census. Mary Susanna was living there with them at 18 Kingdom Road at the time of her death on 31st December 1916 and was buried in the parish of Usk.

At St. Michael’s Parish Church monumental inscriptions 27, 26 and 33 refer respectively to Mary Susanna, her son James and grandson Ronald.

On the 1871 census, we find Mary living with her mother at Elm Villa, Mamhilad (her father, John had died in 1864). Mary Susanna’s son, James Frederick Fothergill Rowlands was also at Elm Villa. I assume that they were visiting, although they are also there for the 1881 census.

I’m not sure where they were for the 1891 and 1901 censuses, although note that Mary had returned to Mamhilad by 1911 where she was living at Elm Cottage. She was a widow at this point and living alone on private means.

I lost track of them after this, although admittedly haven’t searched very hard! Any further information on the family will be gratefully received and published.
