Lewis families

Lewis is another name found commonly across Glascoed in this period. I have chosen to focus on 3 lines in particular:

1) Philip and Mary Lewis’ family including Caroline (1811)Phillip (1815) and Thomas (c.1823).

2) Job Lewis of Lower Cwm.

3) Lewis Lewis of Three Stiles.

1) Philip and Mary Lewis’ family

I don’t know much at all about Philip and Mary, other than that they appear on their children’s baptism entries and that they lived in Glascoed at the time.

Phillip (Senior) was listed as a labourer for Caroline and Phillip’s baptisms at Monkswood (1811 and 1815), although by Thomas’ baptism at Llanfihangel Pontymoile, 1823 he was listed as a “Mason”.

2) Job Lewis and family

I don’t know Job’s father or mother’s names, but it is likely that he was either orphaned at an early age, that his parents never married or he was just sent to his relatives to be brought up for reasons unknown to us. I haven’t been able to find a baptism record to date.

In 1841, Job was living at Lower Cwm with the “60 year old” Rachel Lewis as a 13 year old, Rachel must have been his Grandmother. A Rachel Williams, baptised on 22nd May 1771, who married a John Lewis on 13th July 1793 (both events at Usk parish church) is almost certainly the Rachel living at Lower Cwm. Rachel was still the main proprietor (and now “80 years old”) at Lower Cwm in 1851, which Job then took over by 1861.

In 1851, Job was working for his Uncle John Lewis at Lower Trostrey farm.

See Job Lewis’ Bio page for more detail on him. He appeared to be a lively, interesting character; one of a few village characters I’d have particularly loved to meet.

3) Lewis Lewis (1780-1855) of Three Stiles.

Lewis Lewis and his wife Jane (nee Miles) came to Three Stiles at some point between 1818 (when they were at Trevethin) and 1823, when we see Lewis Lewis at Three Stiles on the Land Tax assessment records.

Most of what I know of this family is on Lewis Lewis’ Bio page - many thanks to Jackie Phillips, for providing the information which that bio is based upon.
