Arthur Morgan (1840)

Arthur was born in about 1840 at Glascoed and was christened on 22nd November 1840 at Monkswood Parish Church.

His parents were John Morgan and Mary (nee Arthur). Arthur spent his early life at Hill Farm. He was certainly there until at least the time of the 1861 census, where he was listed as a “Farmer’s son”.

By the time of the 1871 census, we find Arthur living with his mother at Elm Villa, Mamhilad (his father, John had died in 1864). He was working as a “Machine agent”.

Arthur married Caroline Louisa Rees on 18th April 1877 at Mamhilad Parish Church. Caroline was about 16 years younger than Arthur being aged about 21 at the time of marriage. She was from Crickhowell, the daughter of John Rees, a farmer.

According to the 1881 census, Arthur and Caroline were the “Hotel Keepers” of the King’s Head Hotel at Usk. They had two children, Reginald Arthur R. Morgan (born at Swansea, Glamorgan) and Violet Blanche Morgan born in 1880 at Usk.

I lost track of them after this, although admittedly haven’t searched very hard! Any further information on the family will be gratefully received and published.
