Cornelius Evans, 1820-1904


Cornelius Evans was baptised in Llanishen in 1820, brought up and probably born at Tregirog House in that parish. His parents were John and Temperance Evans of Tregirog House.

He came to Glascoed later in life – appearing on the 1881 and 1891 censuses at Glascoed Vach farm. I love this picture of him, provided by Darren. He looks a real strong character to me. I can just imagine him using that stick well!

By 1891 John Griffiths aged 58 Cornelius’s wife’s brother was occupying

New House, number 6 on census with his wife Esther aged 55 and son John aged 29.

By this point, Cornelius had left Glascoed Vach to his daughter Mary Jane and son-in-law, Thomas Parry.

By 1901 John Griffiths aged 68 lived at New House with Annie aged 21 his wife, Bessie his daughter aged 1 and Jane Jones his sister in law. Jane and Annie from Cloddock Herefordshire.

Cornelius was living with his son, John, who was farming at one of Cornelius’ previous farms, Rhydymaen Farm in Llandenny.

DEATH

Cornelius died at the good age of 84 in 1904, I assume still living with his son, John at Llandenny, which was in Monmouthshire registration district.
