Flora Manley

Flora was born in Pontypool according to the 1911 census, and Pat Morris informs me that she was born in 1881. A Flora Manley was registered as born in the March quarter of 1881, so this must be her. The only other possible birth in the indexes seems to have been a Florence Annie Manley, registered in the Newport registration district in the March quarter of 1873.

Flora Ann Manley married William Morgan at Llanfrechfa church, Monmouthshire on 28th May 1900. They had two children by the time of the 1911 census, Sarah Jane, born in the spring of 1901 in Pontypool, and Thomas, who had been born in 1903 at Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan (Thomas later married “Emily” and died in 1973 and was buried at St. Michael’s church, Glascoed.

A William Morgan was living at “Glebe Cottage, Glascoed” at the time of the 1909 Electoral roll, which I assume must have been the same dwelling as Beech Farm Cottage, their residence at the time of the 1911 census.

Flora and William later had two more children, Annie May (1913-2007) and Florence (1920-1979).

Pat also informed me that “William later lived at Pettingale Mill and in 1932 he had built a bungalow in Glascoed on the road between Llananant Farm and Parc Newydd. This bungalow was to be part demolished and then flooded with the development of the Llandegfedd Reservoir. Both my mother and myself attended  Glascoed Primary School.”

Flora sadly died young at the age of 50 on March 15th 1931 and was buried at Glascoed church.
