PONTYPOOL.

ANOTHER UNSUPPORTED CHARGE.—James Meredith was charged with stealing an axe, the property of his uncle, Philip Lewis, at Glascoed.—It appeared that he merely took the axe from one place, to cut a stick, and left it in another place, in consequence of forgetfulness. —The case was dismissed, and the prosecutor expressed his regret that the accused had been taken into custody.

(Webmaster Note: This James Meredith was actually James Meredith Junior, son of James (aka “Jemmy”) Meredith of Sunny Bank Cottage).

CAPTURE OF A SHEEPSTEALER.—On Thursday last, a man, named John Harney, a native of Glascoed, paid a visit to this town, when he was apprehended by an elderly man who knew him, and was denounced as a sheepstealer. The accused had several times put up" at one of the most respectable inns in Pontypool, but suspicion as to his character having been in some way aroused, he was, at his last call, refused accommodation. It turned out that he was wanted' for stealing sheep from the Henllis Mountain and that a butcher at Cardiff, who had bought sheep of him, had got into trouble in consequence, but cleared himself by proving that the sale was a bona fide transaction. Defendant was remanded till next day, when he was to be brought before the Newport Bench.

(Webmaster Note: John Harney was the husband of Martha Meredith, of the Sunny Bank Cottage Meredith family).
