John Arthur Morgan

John Arthur Morgan was the eldest son of John and Mary Morgan of Hill Farm, Glascoed. He was born in approx 1833 and was christened at Monkswood parish church on 20th February 1833.

He is mentioned on the 18411851 and 1861 censuses as living at home. He was unmarried at all of these censuses. His occupation was unsurprisingly, “Farmer’s son”. The only other place that I have found him, to date is on his sister, Anne Elizabeth’s marriage certificate - he was the first witness. I assume that since his father had recently died, John would have been the brother who was asked to give his sister’s hand in marriage to her new husband, Alexander Wynter Blyth (a medical student).

Fergus McLachlan, a descendant of John Arthur has filled in a number of gaps in my original account. I have reproduced his email below. Many thanks to him for this update and for allowing me to reproduce it on the site.

“I am the great-great grandson of John Arthur Morgan as outlined on your website and thought you might like to know a little more about him. You are welcome to share this information there if you would like to.

He married Martha Powell in Orcop, Herefordshire on 24 January 1866. Martha spent much of her childhood and early adult life living with her aunt Eliza Rudge, the wife of Charles Coleman the miller living at Prioress Mill (Llanbaddock). Martha is listed as living with them in the 1851 and 1861 census records.

John Arthur’s address on the marriage certificate was in Mamhilad with the occupation of Farmer. The address is Lower House Farm in 14 Nov 1868 when his daughter Martha Emily Morgan, my great grandmother, was born. That is also the residence given in the 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses (albeit as Bottom House in 1881).

He died on 02 Feb 1899.”

It is worth noting that Charles Coleman and John Morgan (John Arthur’s father) probably knew each other very well. See the poem “Doggerel” in the Glascoed riots pages, for example. Consequently, I imagine that Martha and John Arthur had known each other from an early age.
