Derek explained that his Grandfather, Edward Leonard Gill (1904-1995), was living at Poplar Tree Cottage from about 1911 with his Uncle Ted Porch, Aunty Florence and widowed Grandfather, James Daniel Porch.
Derek explains: "This is a bit of a strange family story, elements of which I have never quite got to the bottom of and perhaps never will."
What follows is a combination of Derek's research, family stories and my own research.
James Daniel Porch was born in 1850 at Beckington in Somerset (christened there on 4^th August 1850). His parents were James, a stone mason, and Ann. James (junior) was married in Beckington on the 4^th September 1879, to Elizabeth Price, the daughter of Rees Price, a butcher. Elizabeth was born c. 1856 at Crickhowell in Breconshire.
James and Elizabeth had six children including a son, Edward (b. 1885) and also a daughter Lily (b. December quarter, 1880 - Vol 5c, page 453).
Derek continues: "Lily moved to London, met and married Harry Edward Gill in Kensington Registration district towards the end of 1900. They had a son also called Edward Leonard Gill, aka Ted. Ted was my own maternal grandfather, b 19^th October 1904. He died in 1995. Harry and Lily lived in Battersea in London, which is where my Grandad Ted was born."
When Ted Gill was around 6 and a half, he moved to Glascoed, moving in with his childless Uncle, Ted Porch (This must have been shortly after the 1911 census). "I don't know how Ted Porch (of Poplar Tree Cottage) met his wife Florence. I believe my Grandad (Edward Junior) went to school in Glascoed from that age and I believe he was fostered by his Uncle Edward Porch and his wife Florence."
"I'm not entirely sure why he moved to Glascoed and away from his own parents. That there was Welsh fresh air and a long way from South London was I think mentioned once. Also that Ted Porch wanted someone to help him and work with him as a builder (or farmer) was mentioned too, as he had no son (or daughter). Perhaps both are true, perhaps neither."
"As a father of two I can't fathom why someone would send their eldest son (though Harry and Lily did end up having 9 children), 200 or more miles away to live".
"My Great-Great Grandad (James Daniel Porch) died in 1929. Your website suggests Edward and Florence had moved by 1929, so maybe this was connected?"
"I believe my Grandad (Edward Gill) stayed in Glascoed for some years. He may have learned to drive there. He met my grandmother however in North Wales sometime between 1927 and 1931 and then they married in 1931 and settled in the Frome area, Somerset. I guess he must have learned some building skills from Ted Porch who I think was a builder as he helped build houses in Frome soon after my mother was born in 1932."
"I estimate he moved to Glascoed in around 1911. He was living in Glascoed at the time of the 1921 census."
"My grandfather (Ted Junior) if alive would be 117 now. And would I guess have left Glascoed sometime between the ages of 17 and 27. Again I am not sure when. I'm sure no one would remember him now. Everyone who even might have done would have passed away."
