Neville Grieves: His recollections from conversations with his mother, Olga Hubbard.Children: 1. Mary Sumner (1869- ) 2. Solino Sumner (1871-1942) 3. Martha Jane Sumner (Abt 1873- ) 4. Elizabeth Sumner (1879- )
Robert was originally a Mill Manager in Oldham. He was sent by his employer to russia to open a factory as manager in charge. Neville's brother had pictures of their house in Russia. It was a bungalow type house (probably taken in the 1890s) with a verandah. They also had servants including a coachman, cleaners and a woman who used to do the washing.
They had a bull mastiff named Carlo. One day Carlo was locked outside the house by mistake and was killed by wolves.
My notes say that they were "not too far out of Moscow (St. Petersburg) - ??? - Robert had a friend who worked for the Tsar. Robert (and family?) stayed in the Tsar's palace. They used to stay for long periods (where?).
Notes
General:
Robert was buried in Hyde cemetery in 1931. His wife presumably died several years earlier, since she is not in the grave. 2733

Spouses and Children
1. Samuel Penney (1870 - 1905) Marriage: Cir 1896 Marriage Notes
Selina was the daughter of Robert Sumner, who had become a Mill Manager. Sam Penney was an engineer at Mather & Platt's. Neville Grieves believes that this is how they met.Children: 1. Vara Penney (1898-1986) 2. Hilda Penney (1904-1979) 3. Samuel Penney (1904-1983) 2. *Ernest Victor Emmanuel Hubbard (1873 - ) 837 Marriage: Sep Q 1906 - Stockport, Cheshire 1765Marriage Events
• Separation: 1908. 1766 Marriage Notes
"Victor drank with all his cronies - so he left Selina (before or after Hare & Hounds? - probably after). Left her with his 2 stepchildren, Sam & Vara, Olga and twins who died later. She couldn't cope with the pub on her own and was left without anything."Children: 1. Olga Hubbard (1907-1980)
Selina then moved to a cottage at the bottom of Joel Lane in Gee Cross, then eventually to Rowbotham Street. Twins died.
Selina took in washing and baking etc to get by. She used to help as a barmaid in other people's pubs - e.g. the Grapes in Gee Cross - demoralising after owning her own public house."
Notes
General:
Solino was a poorly girl (weak constitution) the Doctor advised her father to take her out to Russia with him when he went - to do her good.
When Vara Penney died she had a huge black box where Selina's (?) clothes were stored on board ship (journey took "months on end").
Neville also recalls that Solino "had twins who died in infancy" - I;m not sure whether she was married to Sam or Ernest at this time.
Selina kept two public houses. The "Hare and Hounds" on Werneth Low and the Navigation Hotel in Woodley. Ernest Hubbard was a drinker who drank the profits of the pub prior to leaving his wife - this contributed to Selina losing the pub. 2739
