Research:

Could Alexander be the brother of John Robertson (1800-1866, born Kirkmichael, Perthshire)?
This is a summary of my conclusions as written to Jane Tresize, an ancestry contact and distant cousin, on 22nd September 2022. It is conjecture - but could it be true?

Elspeth Fisher was born around 1798 in Kinclaven, Perthshire (or possibly Dunkeld - the censuses disagree). She married an Alexander Robertson in Errol, Perthshire in 1820. They continued to live in Errol, until some time between 1832 and 1835 when they had moved across to Liff, on the outskirts of Dundee. They moved into Dundee itself by 1838.
(Alexander and his first wife Isabell had married at Kinnoull, Perthshire in 1830 and moved to Errol by 1831 - near to his sister, Elspeth. They were still there in 1834 but were in Dundee by 1837). We know all this from the ages of their children.
So we know that Elspeth and Alexander must have been very close - Alexander following Elspeth to where she moved.
Elspeth, Alex Fisher's sister, was living at the Hilltown, Dundee, with her husband (Alexander Robertson) and children.
In the 1851 census, Elspeth was living at 29 Hilltown, Dundee.
She moved to Nelson Street by 1861, although very very interestingly - we find another of our ancestors living at 29 Hilltown in 1861 - and until his death in 1866 ... John Robertson, father of Elizabeth Hunter Robertson, our Great Great Grandmother - who then married our Alexander Fisher, Elspeth's brother in 1857.
Does this seem like a huge coincidence to you too? I am guessing that Elspeth Fisher, found that her brother Alexander who she was very close had been recently widowed in his mid-fifties. I think she might have played matchmaker introducing her unmarried 28 year old spinster niece (Elizabeth Hunter Robertson) - most women married before they reached 28 at that time - to Alexander who was in need of a wife.
The coincidence that John Robertson was living at 29 Hilltown (a large residence with several households, it has to be said) in 1861 and Elspeth had been there in 1851 (and quite possibly 1841 too - with her husband at first, Alexander Robertson - around the same age as John Robertson - isn't it just likely that John and Alexander could be brothers?
The other links that make me wonder this:
John Robertson was working as a labourer in 1851 and was a Railway Porter by 1861.
Elspeth's son, James interestingly was a Railway Clerk in 1851. Could he have helped John Robertson (who I believe to be his Uncle?) to get a job at the station?
The final one is that I noticed on the 1841 census, Elspeth (Alexander Fisher's sister) was living with her husband Alexander Robertson, aged 40 in the Hilltown and a 76 year old lady, Janet Robertson was also at that address as part of the household it appears.
This must be Alexander Robertson's mother. Could this be John Robertson's mother too? I noticed that you have John Robertson's mother as a Janet in your family tree. There were about 5 John Robertsons born in Kirkmichael around 1800 - I would be interested to know how you have established that our John Robertson had those parents. That could be another key to unlocking all this.

Thanks for your message. Your great grandmother Agnes Gair was the sister of John Gair who was married to my wife's grandfather's sister Cecilia Ramsay. They married on 5 Jun 1885 at Rosebank, Denfield, Arbroath, Angus. We do not have the date of John's death but it was before 1894. He may have died in the USA. Cecilia then married David Robertson who was the widower of Sarah Gair (sister of John and Agnes) in 19 March 1897 and they went to Canada after their daughter Caroline was born. Sarah Gair died 7 July 1896 in Monifieth, Angus.

General:

John and Cecilia's daughter Rebecca married in Canada (she had gone out to join her brother),her husband had already 'joined up' to fight in WWI. Rebecca was pregnant and, on hearing that her husband was missing, set off for Uk (and Scotland to her mother's) to but then David Robertson died at the beginning of 1916. Cecilia with her two small children Caroline and James (Jim) plus Rebecca and William left for Canada to join her son Alex and wife Mary. There they remained and Cecilia died in the early 1940's.
