Mr Mann. He took us for Geography, he once caught me messing about and told the whole class that I had not come top because I was bright, But because the rest of the class where dim. But I liked him he was very fair and I did learn quite a bit from him. Mr Jeffries English I think. And the good looking Miss Tuckwell, Don't think I learned a lot? had other things on my mind.
Mr Pitt the Head, used to see him quite a bit Don't know why but my hands always hurt afterwards.

NOTES FROM CONVERSATION WITH EDITH CLYDE PURNELL (nee Brown): 19/03/1994

Clyde was brought up by James & Mary Ann Pitt, of Pontnewynydd.

She remembered Hilda Jenkins as a light, bubbly sort of personality - commenting how sad it was that she died. She was a teacher - Clyde confirmed that Hilda & Ernie used to go swimming together. She also said that Hilda is buried at Trevethin Parish Church.

She said that Ernie was a lovely man - very well-educated - I think she said that he helped to bring Clyde up - he was 10 years older than her. She said that he would have been Head of Caerleon College, if he had lived - he apparently died sitting on his wife Cerrie's lap. (I don't believe that this was strictly true, since he had retired 3 or 4 years prior to his death).

Cerrie was described as a lovely person, as well - another ex-teacher. 358

NOTES FROM CONVERSATION WITH EDITH CLYDE PURNELL (nee Brown): 19/03/1994

Clyde was brought up by James & Mary Ann Pitt, of Pontnewynydd.
She was sent to them originally, as a baby, because she had a medical condition, that required treatment at Pontypool Hospital. After she recovered, she was wanted back by her parents (Fred & Annie Brown - Annie was James & Mary Ann's eldest child) - at this point I believe her parents lived in the Rhondda valley. There was a disagreement about this - eventually James & Mary Ann won the day and brought Clyde up themselves.

Clyde remembers working in her grandparents' grocery shop.
She remembers her Grandparents with great affection & love.
She described the Pitt family as a very GOOD family.
She idolised James Pitt - he was described as a lovely, good man - she recalled how in his work as an Insurance Agent, he had to go to Weston-Super-Mare every Wednesday on the "Steamer" - and took Clyde with him every week. She kept telling me how Mary Ann was "the most beautiful girl in the Glascoed" - and a very kind, good woman. 358

Notes
General:
A note regarding Tony Pitt's move from Eccles to Carmarthen Rural District Council in the early 1960s.
In those days, English councils required only references when staff were due to leave, however Welsh councils required testimonials. Tony's employer was not prepared to provide a testimonial. A solution was found through a Sanitary inspector from Abergavenny District Council, where Tony had spent a year on placement whilst training.
Without this testimonial, Tony did not believe that he would have had much chance of a job in Wales. The Abergavenny inspector spoke very highly of Tony's work and character, which may well have swung the balance in the recruitment.

Notes
General:
Arnold David Noel PITT
Occupation: A teacher: Head of Remedial Education at Wigmore High School where he taught from 1971 to 1987. On retirement, Arnold continued Teaching and Writing; including a position as Editor of "Esperanto teacher".
Addresses: Townsend Court, Green Lane, Leominster and in Zielona Gora, Poland.
Education: King Henry Viii Grammar School, Abergavenny. University of Birmingham. Open University.
circumstances around their death (eg "died after a short illness"): Arnold died after a short illness, by the side of his loving wife, Kamila in the home they shared at Zielona Gora, Poland.
What were their hobbies/to which clubs or societies did they belong? Arnold was a passionate Internationalist and was a leading member for decades in Esperanto Circles in the UK. He was the Editor of "Esperanto Teacher" for several years and was a passionate and intelligent advocate for the language. Arnold was also an author, publishing through the Leominster Writer's Circle - including a book on easy bike rides in Herefordshire. Arnold was also active in the local community and took a keen interest in local politics. He was a volunteer at Leominster Resource Centre for several years. Arnold had sympathies with the Bahá faith and later in life attended Leominster priory when he was back in the UK.
How would you describe them in just a few words? Arnold was a kind and very sociable man who loved life and people. Throughout his life he worked to create a better world, through communication, education and understanding. He was very much a European and Internationalist in outlook and had friends all over the world.
What will they be remembered for most (achievements, career, family, public service etc)? We all have our own memories of Arnold. As a teacher he always did his very best to help children learn to the best of their abilities in his role as the Head of Remedial Education at Wigmore High School. He continued his public service on retirement through a range of creative and voluntary activities with community organisations. To his family, Arnold was kind, encouraging and told the most wonderful, humorous stories. He he had our backs, in the sunniest and darkest of days. He was very much loved. To his family in Poland he was a man of patience, despite struggles with learning a difficult language later in life, loving and a man of many and surprising interests even in his twilight years, including swimming, watching speedway, teaching English, making music with his Polish "Grandson", Matty. And so much more. He was a real, very lovable character.
Who did he leave behind? His widow, Kamila Pitt-Kaliczek. He was also loved by Kamila's family in Poland and his British nephews, nieces and their children.
When and where is the funeral, and who is invited? Thursday 22nd September, at 1.20pm (CEST) at the old cemetery in Zielona Gora, Poland. A video link will be available.
Life story: Arnold was born in 1937 in Pontypool, Monmouthshire, the son of teachers and the youngest of three brothers. The tales of Arnold as a boy were of a young man who loved adventure, friendship and learning. The family moved to Abergavenny when Arnold was a teenager, when his dad was offered a position as the first headteacher of Grofield Secondary Modern School in the town. After sixth form, Arnold attended University in Birmingham and then followed in the family line, training as a school teacher. He married Marjorie Harrison, also a school teacher, and came to live in Herefordshire in the early 1970s first to Shobdon, then Leominster, where he and Marjorie put down roots. Arnold loved living in the county and put down roots. He taught at Wigmore High School and became the Head of Remedial Education. Arnold and Marjorie shared many interests and values including the International language, Esperanto, service to others, the Bahá faith and travel. In a time when his contemporaries spent their holidays in the UK or on Mediterranean beaches, Arnold and Marjorie took their Morris Traveller "behind the Iron curtain" to attend Esperanto conferences and visit friends in Hungary, Poland and other countries little visited by British tourist in the 1960s and 1970s. It was their heartfelt wish for others to adopt a common language in Esperanto and he worked hard to promote the vision throughout his life. They entertained many friends made through Esperanto and the Bahá faith in their various homes. On retirement from paid work in 1987, Arnold continued to be of service to others, promoting the use of language and the cause of education and Esperanto. He became involved in a variety of community projects and "good causes" including the Leominster Writers' Circle and the Leominster Resource centre. His passion for language extended to writing and journalism, as editor of "Esperanto Teacher", a national publication and as a self-published author. His works included "The General Organising Director", "Cerrie" - an account of his mother's life and a book detailing "easy bike rides" around Herefordshire. Arnold lost his dear wife Marjorie in early 2010. They were a beautifully matched couple who weren't only a married couple - they were life-long friends too.
Some time after Marjorie's death, Arnold was encouraged to join some British friends who were travelling to an Esperanto conference to Mielno, on the Polish Baltic sea. After a long journey, Arnold's friends retired for a lie-down, but Arnold, always curious and willing to explore decided to stretch his legs and visited the nearby lake. It was there that he bumped into Kamila. They got talking - and just never stopped! He told his family that they spent the evening dancing and this led to their marriage in Leominster in August 2012. Kamila and Arnold shared a love for life and people and family and had tremendous fun together. Arnold, who had never had children of his own, had always treated his nephews and nieces in a special way. Marriage to Kamila introduced Arnold to a new family in Poland, who adopted him as one of their own. His 16 year old Grandson by marriage, Matty speaks of Arnold as his "Second English teacher." Matty consequently now speaks excellent English. They made music together (Arnold on keyboard and Matty on guitar). Kamila's family noticed that Arnold was a man of so many active interests, even as he reached his final years. Arnold's intellect was sharp and he remained interested in politics and debate to the very end. Life became more focused on Poland as travel became more difficult, although Arnold and Kamila always tried to visit Leominster each year when health allowed.
Arnold died on 28th August, aged 85, suddenly but peacefully at home in Zielona Gora, with Kamila at his side. In his final moments, Arnold was able to express his deep love for Kamila, how happy she had made him and "I've had a good life". It truly was a full life, well-lived. Arnold will always be remembered with love by his family, friends and the many others who knew him. 1005
