• Occupation: Production worker, S.A. Drivers, River Meadow Dye Works, Stalybridge, Cheshire. 2695,2696 1950s/ 1960s?. Worked here twice (moved to job making dog kennels for export in between). She knew the fabrics and machines etc and was offered chargehand, but declined. She did not want promotion over other employees who had worked there far longer and in any case the money was better elsewhere.

"The manager at SA Drivers highly valued Joyce as an employee - each time she returned to work at Drivers was a result of the Manager offering her a higher salary than she was presently on. She knew both the office and factory procedures."

.

• Occupation: Retail Assistant - Wool counter, Littlewoods, Ashton-Under-Lyne, Lancashire. Joyce did not stay here long. 1950s.

• Occupation: Production worker - putting mincemeat in jars., Cir 1953, Robertson's Jams, Stalybridge?, Cheshire. 2695,2696 Joyce worked at Robertson's Jams for one week only - her baby daughter, Julie was crying too much at home on the nights that Joyce was working, so the job proved unsustainable.

• Occupation: Production worker - night shift, Cir 1954, Aerial Lighting, Stalybridge, Cheshire. Childcare issues forced Joyce to leave this job also.

• Occupation: Production work - making dog kennels for export, Cir 1955, Stalybridge?. 2695,2696 Not sure on exact dates.

• Occupation: Factory worker - cigarette production, Senior Service, Dukinfield, Cheshire. 2695,2696 Had recently moved to Dukinfield, so this job was a better situation as more local. In 1960s.

• Occupation: Market trader, Hyde Market, Cheshire. 2695,2696 Selling curtains, tights and children's wear. Also operated in Stalybridge and travelled to Rochdale and Oldham. In 1960s.

• Occupation: Cafeteria owner, Between 1969 and 1979, Snackery & Grill, Stalybridge, Cheshire. 2695,2696 Joint ownership between Neville and Joyce Grieves

The cafe was used (along with other shops in the town) for the filming of the major feature film, "Yanks" in the late 1970s (released 1979), directed by John Schlesinger.

The cast and crew used the cafe for refreshments when in between filming. The cafe along with the other shops used, had their fronts redecorated in the style of a 1940s wartime street.

Joyce's son, Linden, was an extra in the film, but as far as we can tell ended up "on the cutting room floor".

They ran the cafe without access to their own car, and made regular trips on the bus to the warehouse to get stock for the cafe.

Notes
General:
Story from Mary Joyce regarding her childhood at church.

When I was a small child I was taken to church by my mother until I was old enough to go on my own.The school stood next to the church, and as school children we were obliged to go to the children's mass, which was at 9am.This was a short service so the children would not get bored.Every class had its teacher with it.You were not allowed to speak in church,or turn round to see what was going on behind you.Every girl wore a hat ,and the boys took off their caps.Everyone wore "Sunday Best".Best clothes were reserved for SUnday. They were bought for Whitsuntide (Pentecost) and had to last till the following year. When you came home from church you changed into ordinary clothes to play outside. Some children from other churches were expected to go to Sunday School, often in addition to going to church in the morning.Whitsuntide was a special occasion.Every church joined in a procession. Our Church had a May Queen. She was attended by Maids of Honour and a page boy.She had six train bearers to su

pport her long white dress. The Maids of Honour and train bearers were chosen from the school children. The other girls all wore white and carried a bunch of flowers. Each church followed a banner carried by strong men frm the church, and had a band to lead them. When the procession (or Whit Walks as they were known)were over we went back to school for buns and pop, etc.,the played games with the priests and teachers. When we got older the children's mass was still at 9am but I went to the 11am service because the Mass was sung in Latin (which we all had to learn at school) If you went to church every weekday morning, which some people did,you were gien cocoa and biscuits before school. One girl walked to church at 6am. every day with her family!
