Burial Registers

On a visit to my father’s cousin, John Williams, I was told that Glascoed’s people in previous generations were “as poor as church mice”. I have no reason to doubt this; most of the “farmers” had smallholdings and others were labourers. As such, a number of my ancestors don’t seem to have a surviving grave. Someone told me once that more people were buried at Mount Zion than St. Michael’s because burial there was cheaper!

What they DID have though, in many cases, was a record of their burial. Some are tricky to trace – such as my Great-Great Grandfather, John Pitt, which I’m still looking for. I enquired with Mount Zion Baptist Chapel recently and was informed that they do not have records of burials in the churchyard.

Thankfully we have, thanks to the foresight of Glyn Williams, Dave Woolven and Susan Wright, extensive Monumental Inscriptions for Mount Zion churcyard, which began to be recorded by Glyn shortly after World War 2. It’s also worth checking out the Monumental Inscriptions pages.

Burial registers from neighbouring churches are included, thanks to people like David Woolven, Mike John and the Mongenes family history group, who have done a fantastic job transcribing the registers over many years. Many thanks to all of them for their hard work and allowing me to abstract Glascoed people from their copies of registers.

St. Mary’s Church, Usk and St. Michael’s Church, Glascoed: Burial registers

St. Michael’s church, Glascoed, was established as a daughter church to St. Mary’s, Usk in the mid 1860s. While today it is part of the Parish of Mamhilad with Monkswood with Glascoed, it was initially part of Usk parish. Since the registers were kept in common between Usk and Glascoed initially, I have kept the two churches together for this summary of the burial registers.

My Great-Great Grandmother, Sarah Pitt (nee Davies) was at the centre of a scandal that the local newspapers termed “Suspicion of infanticide” in their reporting. In 1868, she gave birth to a child who died after a few hours. In order to save money on graveyard fees, late at night the father of the child, James Williams, buried the body secretly. The inquest brought this apparently not uncommon rural practice to light – so it may be that there are more bodies buried in churchyards than these registers would indicate!

After the opening of St. Michaels’ Churchyard, Glascoed in 1862, most Glascoed people were buried there instead.

A bit of a mystery since Catherine Harris of Upper House Glascoed was also recorded as having been buried at Glascoed on this date – although that entry was made many years later in 1922 by the Cleric, PLC Nash. So was she buried at Monkswood or Glascoed Church – it’s hard to be sure!
