SHOCKING ACCIDENT NEAR PONTYPOOL.

A shocking accident occurred on Saturday afternoon on the Horse and Jockey Pitch, a hilly piece of road about a couple of miles out of Pontypool, on the Usk-road. A little girl, about nine or ton years ol age, daughter of Job Thomas, of Glascoed, was returning from Pontypool Market in a cart belonging to Edward Williams, lime burner, Glascoed. When near the place named above the horse became unmanageable, and started off. The little girl attempted to get out of the cart, when she fell, and the wheel went over her head. She was laid on the bank, and assistance was sent for to Pontypool, but she died in a short time.

PONTYPOOL WOMAN MISSING

A young woman, named Elizabeth Williams, wife of a labouring man, named Alfred Williams, living at Canal Bank, Pontypool, left her home on Monday morning, and has been missing since. Before going she prepared her husband’s food, and told some neighbours that she would be back in the afternoon, but did not return. On Monday the husband received a telegram, purporting to be signed by his wife and sent from Newport, stating that she had entered the hospital at Newport. The husband travelled to Newport, and, making inquiries, failed to find that his wife had been admitted to the new hospital or the workhouse infirmary. She had been in ill-health at Pontypool. She was a native of Newport. The woman wore a black and white hat, is about 30 years of age, and was in mourning. She had been married about a year.

Lot 3. A COPPICE WOOD, in the parish of Monyddusloine, known by the name of Craig Vaur, 157 Acres, more or less; 20 years’ growth.

Lot 4. A COPPICE WOOD, in the parish of Bedwellty, known by the name of Graig Vaur, 237 Acres, more or less; 20 years growth.

I have been given a copy of a report from the Western Times on Friday 9th April 1915 by a contact who has informed me that this is copyrighted. So what follows is a paraphrase of the story.

Death of a Centenarian

The report concerns Mr Thomas Williams, who at the time of his death on the night of Monday 5th April was in his 103rd year. He was living at Cefn House, Rogerstone at the time of death. He was a farmer’s son who had worked at a Cwmbran factory which produced nuts and bolts. He then kept a public-house at Glascoed for 30 years. After this he moved to Rogerstone to live with his son.
