Town of Ramsgate, 288 High Street , Wapping, E1W 2PN
Wapping index

at 62 Wapping High Street by 1895 due to road renumbering; The only historic pub of Wapping High Street which still stands. Formerly the Red Cow [Address for Red Cow given as both Reardon Path and Anchor & Hope Lane at various times] and also the Prince of Denmark. The claimed date for foundation of this pub is 1545. **

According to the website: portcities.org.uk/london......

'The Town of Ramsgate pub on Wapping High Street. The first alehouse on the site was built in 1460. Formerly known as the Red Cow, it acquired its present name in 1688 to attract trade from the Kentish fishermen who used to land their catch at Wapping Old Stairs. The Inn has a famous association with Judge George Jeffreys. Following the flight abroad of James I I, Jeffreys attempted to follow him. Disguised as a seaman, he hid on board a vessel moored in the Thames but rashly came ashore for a drink in the Red Cow, an act that led to his recognition and arrest.' ; The Pub is later at 62 Wapping High Street after a renumbering exercise.

A break in at the Town of Ramsgate pub: 18 Aug 1862, Town of Ramsgate, 288 High Street, Tower Hamlets, London. E1W 2PN.

Old Bailey Proceedings Online (www.oldbaileyonline.org, version 8.0, 30 March 2018), August 1862, trial of WILLIAM ELLMAN (21) JAMES REGAN (22) (t18620818-864).
WILLIAM ELLMAN, JAMES REGAN, Theft > burglary, 18th August 1862.
864. WILLIAM ELLMAN (21), and JAMES REGAN (22) , Burglariously breaking and entering the dwelling-house of John Richards, and stealing therein a box and 8l. 5s. 6d. in money, his property.

MR. RIBTON conducted the Prosecution.

JOHN TYRRELL (Policeman, M 163). On 18th July, I saw the prisoners in Union-street, at a quarter past 4 in the morning, walking together\emdash I observed that Ellman had something in his pockets\emdash they saw me, and both tried to get out of my way\emdash I succeeded in taking Ellman\emdash the other man shaped\emdash another constable pursued him\emdash I found this tin box (produced) on Ellman, containing 7l., all in threepenny-pieces, loose in the box, without any paper\emdash I also found 1l. 5s. 4d. in old coppers, in this handkerchief\emdash I asked him what he had, and he said, "Nothing"\emdash at the station I asked him where he had got it\emdash he said a man gave it to him on London-bridge to carry\emdash I said, "Where did he tell you to carry it to?"\emdash he said, "He told me to follow him"\emdash I said, "Where is he gone to?"\emdash he said, "I don't know; I have lost him"\emdash that is all that passed.

Regan. Q. What turning did this man take out of Union-street? A. Down Whitecross-street, and I followed\emdash you had on a black coat, and a Guernsey under it, and cord trousers.

COURT. Q. Had you known him before? A. Yes; for two or three months\emdash I am quite sure he is the man.

HENRY HACKETT (Policeman, M 176). On Friday morning, the 18th, I was in Mint-street, Borough, and saw the prisoners together coming out of King-street into Mint-street\emdash I stopped them, and found this tin box on Ellman\emdash I did not see the other constable there\emdash I put my hand in Ellman's pocket, and asked him what this was\emdash he said, "Nothing"\emdash I did not take it out then\emdash the other constable came out of King-street, and I gave Ellman to him to take to the station, while I pursued Regan, who had run up Mint-street and got away altogether\emdash I next saw him on the following Wednesday, in the Duke's Head public-house, in Redcross-street\emdash I went into the room, and told him I wanted him for being concerned with little Bill in a tin box robbery over the water, on Friday morning\emdash he said, "You are mistaken"\emdash I said, "No, I am not"\emdash policeman, M 163, asked him where he was that night, and he said he was at work at the water side from 12 o'clock on Thursday till 2 o'clock on the Friday morning\emdash I took him in custody\emdash I am certain he is the man\emdash I knew him before.

Ellman. He took us down to the station. Witness. I took neither to the station on the Friday; I went in pursuit of Regan.

JOHN RICHARDS . I keep the Town of Ramsgate public-house, 280, High-street, Wapping\emdash on the 17th I went to bed, having closed my house in the usual way\emdash this box is mine\emdash it was on the shelf in the bar-parlour on that night\emdash I cannot say exactly the sum of money that was in it, but it was all in threepenny-pieces, of which there was a great quantity\emdash it might have been as much as 7l.\emdash I had some old copper money in a cupboard under the counter, and in the morning I missed it\emdash I could not swear to it\emdash all that is produced is old\emdash I was collecting the old separately\emdash I am positive that some one got in from the cellar flap\emdash it was shut down the night before in the usual manner\emdash I cannot swear that it was bolted, but I think it was\emdash in the morning I found the tools down in the cellar\emdash they must have got in and out that way; there is no other way by which they could have got in\emdash I am positive it was closed.

Ellman's Defence. This man stopped me and asked me to cary the box. I did not know what was in it at the time. He gave me some coppers for Myself, and when I got further on he gave me the handkerchief to carry.

Regan's Defence. I was never in this man's company in my life; no one can prove I was. The policeman has seen me several nights since in Mint-street,

and would not take me; and now he says he took me one afternoon. He knows where I live, and everything else.

HENRY HACKETT (re-examined). I did not see him between the night that I lost him, and the time when I took him in the public-house\emdash it its not true that I was talking with him on the night of the 18th\emdash I was looking for him.

ELLMAN\emdash GUILTY .\emdash Confined Twelve Months.

RYAN\emdash GUILTY .**\emdash He was further charged with having been convicted of felony in March, 1858; to which he

PLEADED GUILTY.**\emdash Ten Years' Penal Servitude.
