From conversation with Margaret Milne Fisher today.
Isabella Gair Milne, her sister Mamie and brother Jim (probably Jack as well) were sent to live with Aunty Maggie after their parents had died. She was their father's elder sister and would have been about 50 years old when they came to live with her. Mamie and Bella were sent out to work in the Jute mills to help provide for the family.
Maggie was strict - and wasn't Margaret Fisher's favourite aunty by a long chalk. Apparently after Bella had married, she used to take her family round for family teas. One of Maggie's habits was to warm up a teaspoon in boiling water and put it on the bare skin of whoever was sat beside her.
Margaret Milne Roscoe had come to live with Aunty Maggie too - and was brought up by Maggie until Maggies death in 1939. Margaret Roscoe would have been around her 10th birthday when Aunty Maggie Milne died. Margaret Fisher (So many Margarets in our family!) - was a bit mystified why Margaret Roscoe would have been so upset, since MF saw her Great Aunt Maggie as a bit of a witch!
A lady known as "Aunty Kitty" was Aunty Maggie's housekeeper.
Margaret Roscoe's mother was a Hetty Roscoe. Maggie Milne met Hetty who was an unmarried mother, and Maggie saw her as a bit of a project, we think. Maggie adopted Margaret Roscoe after she was born - and MF believes that this gave Maggie Milne the chance to be a mother.
