  • Annie Mary Parry b 1924 told me that Mary Williams of Cross Farm was engaged to marry John Lewis of Upper House, however this engagement was broken and she married his older brother William. William and Mary had 4 sons and 1 daughter whilst John and Martha settled at Upper House and had 3 daughters. This caused much resentment between the two brothers.
  • Annie Mary Parry referred to Mary Ann Lewis of Upper House as Aunt Polly.
  • Also said that William – Grancher Lewis – Had one leg and a peg leg. The other leg was lost in a local railway engine accident. When ? He received £600 compensation. With this money he had a house built in New Inn. Buried at Glascoed Baptist Chapel ??
  • However, there is an alternative story in the family about how “Grancher” Lewis lost his leg. He was returning home from Pontypool in a horse and trap, having consumed a fair amount of ale. Coming down “The Jockey” (near to the Horse and Jockey pub), he lost control. The trap overturned, he was trapped underneath and his leg was crushed.
  • Unsure when he lost his leg, but probably after 1900.
