Census

Progress

All censuses are now loaded up to date.

I decided to re-check the transcriptions I made in case of errors – obviously if you see any errors, please let me know!

I’ve just completed checking the census transcriptions and have found a couple of errors. Obviously there will always be an element of interpretation - especially with the handwriting of some of the enumerators - but I think this time the transcription is a bit tighter.

The 1841 enumerator had a strange method of sometimes putting the wife as last in a household (after the servants) and used ditto strangely! In some cases people I knew to be related to the head of household (same surname) from later censuses etc, were noted below the servants as surname “ditto”. I have put the correct surname where known (on the first transcription I had assumed that ditto meant copy the name directly above). Other than that, there was one age error I had made and a couple of names transcribed wrongly. I had also missed 4 or 5 occupations out all together. So it was worth doing.

Free Transcriptions

The free transcription menus are on the left hand side.

Generally buttons on the site work as fly out menus - just hover over the buttons and see what I mean!!

Original census records

The safest way of confirming records is to find via transcriptions (checking different sources) and then view the originals.

The links below link to ancestry.co.uk site. They offer a 14 day free trial - which is great value - and you can then check the original records.

My year’s subscription (less than £7 per month) was money well spent! I got so much information on my ancestors and also on Glascoed people in this way.
